    According to
Shakespeare’s overall message about the roles of various relationships in our
lives, each couple fits in because of the theme of love, which can be seen in
different means. As a matter of fact, this can be seen on three separate
occasions. First off, Lysander and Hermia face many obstacles, which depicts
love’s difficulties. To continue, Oberon and Puck can be seen as friends who
are unable to work without each other. Furthermore, Oberon’s love juice creates
a contrast between Titania and Bottom. All in all, these couples fit flawlessly
into Shakespeare’s overall message about the role of various relationships in
our lives.

    To begin with,
Lysander and Hermia face many obstacles in their relationship. Shakespeare uses
the difficulty of love to draw the audience into the plot. He uses characters
to show the suffering and applications between loves ones. This can be seen
when Egeus, the father of Hermia, goes to Theseus, the Duke of Athens, and
states, “Full of vexation come I, with complaint/ Against my child, my daughter
Hermia/ Stand forth, Demetrius. My noble lord,/ This man hath my consent to
marry her./ Stand forth, Lysander: and, gracious duke,/ This man hath bewitch’d
the bosom of my child:” (1.1.25-30). As per this line, you can examine that
Hermia’s father wants her to marry Demetrius. Evidently, this creates an
obstacle for the two lovers because they cannot marry each other openly. In a similar
case, Lysander becomes a victim of the magic potion and falls in love with
Helena. When Lysander wakes up he falls in love with Helena and comments,
“Awaking. And run through fire I will for thy sweet sake./ Transparent
Helena! Nature shows art,/ That through thy bosom makes me see thy heart./
Where is Demetrius? O, how fit a word/ Is that vile name to perish on my
sword!” (2.2. 105). Due to the fact that Lysander liked Helena because of the
potion, it distanced the two lovers. This was because Hermia suspected Helena
wooed her man, which created a dispute amongst the two. To sum up, Lysander and
Hermia face many difficulties for their love to flourish.

    Having said that,
Oberon and Puck can be seen as friends because even though Oberon is the boss,
there is a friendly atmosphere between them. For instance, Puck boasted to a
fairy, “Thou speak’st aright;/ I am that merry wanderer of the night./ I jest
to Oberon and make him smile/” (2.1. 45). In agreement with this, you can see
that Oberon is the king of fairies and Puck carries out Oberon’s wishes. You
can easily see the status difference, but they need each other to complete a
task successfully. Aside from being good work partners, they are forgiving and
understanding. This is because of the fact, Oberon exclaimed, “What hast thou
done? Thou hast mistaken quite,/ And laid the love-juice on some true lover’s
sight:/ Of thy misprision must perforce ensue/ Some true love turn’d and not a
false turn’d true.” (3.2. 90). Following the earlier example, Oberon only
merely scolds Puck even though he messed up his orders from Oberon, and puts
the juice on Demetrius’s eyes himself. Oberon is above Puck, but ththey remain
forgiving and understanding, which creates their friendship.

    Likewise, Bottom
and Titania share a bond of contrast created by the love potion. The love
potion is a symbol of powerful nature of love, which can lead to bizarre behaviour
and cannot be resisited. Bottom is surprised by the fact that a fairy, like
Titania, would like him, and so he remarks, “Methinks, mistress, you should
have little reason for that: and yet, to say the truth, reason, and love keep
little company together now-a-days;” (3.1. 130-135). This shows the class
difference between the characters. This is because a relationship between a
common person and a royal person can be seen as very unusual. And, a queen like
Titania would never fall in love with an ass-head. This was only possible as a
result of the magic potion. For instance, Titania turns into to someone who
cannot judge appearances when she states. “I pray thee, gentle mortal, sing
again:/ Mine ear is much enamour’d of thy note;/ So is mine eye enthralled to
thy shape;/ And thy fair virtue’s force perforce doth move me/ On first view to
say, to swear, I love thee.” (3.1. 125-130). In this case. Oberon’s love juice
has turned an intelligent queen into someone with no ability to judge
appearances. Titania’s and Bottom’s relationship shows that love and reason
keep no company, which in their case is because of the class difference,
created by the love potion.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, is a comedic play with the
major theme being love. Love can be interpreted differently for each couple, as
it has such a broad meaning. It can be seen as love’s difficulties with
Lysander and Hermia, as they cannot marry each other openly, and are distanced
because of the loves potion. Oberon is the king of fairies, but has good
company with Puck. Likewise, Titania turned into someone with no ability to judge
appearances, and fell in love with an ass-head. In this way, you can see the
various natures of love, and how there are different kinds of love. In
conclusion, love can be seen in different means for each couple in, “A
Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
